# What is Gerfaut

> Gerfaut is a watch-only bitcoin wallet for Android and desktop that holds no private key. See what it does for the wallets you give it.

Gerfaut is a watch-only bitcoin wallet for Android, Linux, macOS and Windows. Give it a descriptor, an extended public key or an address, and it shows the balance, the history and the coins of that wallet.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Gerfaut is in public beta and has had little testing. Check every address and amount on your signing device before you rely on it. Report anything that looks wrong on GitHub, as [Contact](/docs/help/contact#report-a-bug-or-suggest-a-change) explains.

## Watch your wallets

* **Read the balance:** See the [balance and history](/docs/everyday-use/balances-and-history) and the [UTXOs](/docs/everyday-use/utxos) behind it.
* **Open a transaction:** Follow its inputs, outputs and fee on one diagram. See [Open a transaction](/docs/everyday-use/transaction-details).
* **Receive:** Hand out the next unused address with its QR code. See [Receive](/docs/everyday-use/receive-addresses).
* **Read a policy:** See every spending path of a Miniscript descriptor, with its timelock counted down. See [Read a policy](/docs/wallets/policy-and-timelocks).
* **Broadcast:** Send a transaction your signing device signed, after Gerfaut reads it back in plain words. See [Broadcast](/docs/everyday-use/broadcast-a-transaction).
* **Get notified:** Get a notification when a transaction reaches the mempool, and again when it confirms. See [Notifications](/docs/settings/notifications).
* **Pick the backend:** Stay on the public servers or point Gerfaut at your own node, `.onion` included. See [Backend](/docs/settings/backends-and-your-own-node).
* **Keep it yours:** Lock Gerfaut with an [app lock](/docs/settings/app-lock) and move your wallets with an encrypted [backup](/docs/settings/backup-and-sync).

> [!TIP]
>
> Gerfaut contains no code that generates private keys, handles seeds or signs transactions. It refuses anything that contains a private key or a seed phrase.
