# Notifications

> Get notified when a transaction reaches the mempool and when it confirms, see when each check runs, let Live follow every address and add a widget.

Gerfaut posts each notification from your device, for the wallets of the network selected in **Settings** > **Network**.

> [!WARNING]
>
> While Live runs, your backend's operator sees your addresses, how long Gerfaut stays connected and each IP address it connects from. With the `Automatic` server, that is Blockstream on mainnet and mempool.space on signet and testnet4, unless their Electrum servers fail and Live moves to the next public server. Point Gerfaut at [your own node](/docs/settings/backends-and-your-own-node) to keep all of it to yourself.

## Turn on notifications

**Android**

In step 2, pick how Gerfaut checks:

* **`Live`:** A connection kept open, which brings a notification within seconds.
* **`Every 15 min`, `Every hour` or `Every 6 hours`:** Android checks in the background to save battery, sometimes later than asked.
* **`Off`:** Gerfaut checks only while it is open.

**1. Select the New transactions switch**

Open **Settings** > **Notifications**. On Android 13 and newer, Android asks you to allow notifications the first time.

**2. Select Live under Check for transactions**

The `Live watch` sheet says what Live costs and what your server learns. Select **Turn on Live**.

**3. Let Gerfaut run in the background**

If the sheet offers **Ask Android**, select it and allow Gerfaut to ignore battery optimisation. Live still runs if you refuse, less reliably.

**4. Follow the steps for your phone**

On a Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, Huawei, Honor, Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo or realme phone, the sheet lists what to change in the phone's own battery manager. Change it, then select **Done**.

**5. Read the status line**

The line under `Check for transactions` reads `Connected · Electrum` or `Connected · mempool`, followed by the server. Another Esplora backend reads `Polling every minute`. Android shows a permanent notification, `Watching for transactions`.

<video autoPlay muted loop playsInline preload="metadata" src="https://mintcdn.com/gerfaut/lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA/videos/settings/turn-on-notifications-android.mp4?fit=max&auto=format&n=lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA&q=85&s=cb5d600559f5f2b9d9bdec2a8e273420" aria-label="Turning on notifications on Android: the New transactions switch, Live under Check for transactions, the Live watch sheet, Turn on Live, then the line Connected · Electrum · mempool.space." />

If `Notifications are off for Gerfaut in the system settings.` shows under `New transactions`, select **Open system settings** and allow notifications. Live waits meanwhile, and starts again when you come back to Gerfaut.

![The Notifications screen on Android with New transactions on, the amber line Notifications are off for Gerfaut in the system settings, and the Open system settings button above Show wallet and amount.](https://mintcdn.com/gerfaut/lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA/images/android/settings-notifications-off.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA\&q=85\&s=ca4ae0a98bb2a22f2359fdf63a43412b)

**Desktop**

**1. Select the New transactions switch**

Open **Settings** > **Notifications**.

**2. Read the Live watch line**

The line reads `Connected · Electrum` or `Connected · mempool WebSocket`, followed by the server. Another Esplora backend reads `Polling every minute` instead.

**3. Select Send a test notification**

A test notification appears. If nothing shows, allow notifications for Gerfaut in the system settings and turn off Do Not Disturb.

<video autoPlay muted loop playsInline preload="metadata" src="https://mintcdn.com/gerfaut/lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA/videos/settings/turn-on-notifications-desktop.mp4?fit=max&auto=format&n=lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA&q=85&s=ddc5b50382292a52b7a8716db1618773" aria-label="Turning on notifications on desktop: the New transactions switch, the Live watch line on Connecting, then on Connected · mempool WebSocket · mempool.space." />

With no wallet on the selected network, the Live status line reads `Off until you add a wallet.` Live starts with the first wallet you add.

## Check when notifications arrive

**Android**

| `Check for transactions` | When a notification arrives | What stops it |
| - | - | - |
| `Live` | Within seconds, with Gerfaut open, in the background, swiped away or after a phone restart. | Force-stopping Gerfaut, until you open it again. |
| `Every 15 min`, `Every hour`, `Every 6 hours` | At the next background check, at the interval you picked or later, once the phone is online and its battery is not low. | Force-stopping Gerfaut, until you open it again. |
| `Off` | When Gerfaut syncs while open, at launch or when you sync by hand. | Leaving Gerfaut. |

Nothing arrives while the phone is off. Once it is back on, Gerfaut announces what came in meanwhile at its first check.

While Gerfaut is [disguised as a calculator](/docs/settings/app-lock#disguise-the-app-as-a-calculator-on-android), no notification arrives, whatever the mode.

![The Notifications screen on Android: New transactions and Show wallet and amount on, Live under Check for transactions, the line Connected · Electrum · mempool.space, an amber note about the addresses checked at the next sync, and the Widgets card.](https://mintcdn.com/gerfaut/lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA/images/android/settings-notifications.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA\&q=85\&s=3424b0860b7e608de66926a493828697)

**Desktop**

Gerfaut notifies you within seconds while it runs, open, minimised or locked. Once you close it, nothing arrives. When you open it again, its first sync notifies you of what came in meanwhile.

![The Notifications section of the desktop settings: the New transactions switch, off, the Live watch line on Off, and the Send a test notification button.](https://mintcdn.com/gerfaut/lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA/images/desktop/settings-notifications.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA\&q=85\&s=411066bbd4905f9f75ac137a94c8a9b9)

Within seconds holds for the addresses an Electrum server or a mempool instance pushes to Live. Other addresses wait longer, as below.

## Make Live follow every address

Live follows up to 200 addresses per wallet and 2,000 in all, because public servers limit how many addresses one app may follow. On your own node, the [`This is my node`](/docs/settings/backends-and-your-own-node#follow-more-addresses-on-your-own-node) switch raises the limit to 20,000. A payment to an address Live does not follow shows at the next sync: when Gerfaut opens, when you sync by hand, or at the complete sync Live runs once a day.

In each wallet, Live takes the addresses most likely to move first:

* **Coins:** The addresses that hold coins, where a spend shows.
* **Receive addresses:** The unused ones Gerfaut showed last, as many as the [gap limit](/docs/wallets/add-a-wallet#manage-your-wallets), then as many again past the last one shown.
* **Change addresses:** The same, on the change side.
* **The rest:** Older addresses, newest first.

Between wallets, Live takes addresses in rounds: the first address of each wallet, then the second of each, and so on. That way, a large wallet never crowds out the addresses most likely to move in a small one. Some wallets go first:

* **Pinned wallets:** The wallets you [pin](#pin-the-wallets-live-follows-first) come before all the others. Live finishes their rounds before it starts on any other wallet.
* **Wallets that hold coins:** In each round, they go before the empty wallets.

A server can also refuse some addresses, which then wait for the next sync too. See [what the public servers allow](/docs/settings/backends-and-your-own-node#use-the-public-servers).

> **Use Live with an Esplora backend**
>
> An Esplora backend pushes changes for fewer addresses than an Electrum server. Each minute, Gerfaut reads a few of the other addresses, in turn:
>
> * **A mempool instance:** A public instance, such as mempool.space, pushes changes for ten addresses per connection on mainnet, and for several hundred on signet and testnet4. Gerfaut reads three of the others each minute. With N addresses taking turns, it reads each one about every N/3 minutes.
> * **Another Esplora backend:** It pushes nothing. Each minute, Gerfaut reads the two addresses Live takes first, and one of the others. With N addresses taking turns, it reads each one about every N minutes.
> * **Your own node:** Gerfaut reads 30 addresses a minute instead of three. On a mempool instance, it reads each one about every N/30 minutes. On another Esplora backend, it reads the first two every minute and each of the others about every N/28 minutes.
> * **A server that limits requests:** Each time it does, Gerfaut waits twice as long between two reads, up to ten minutes. It goes back to once a minute half an hour after the last limit.
>
> With 300 addresses taking turns, each one waits about 100 minutes between two reads on a mempool instance, and about 300 minutes on another Esplora backend. The next sync reads all of them.

> **Use Live with a server that refuses addresses**
>
> An Electrum server may take fewer addresses than Live asks it to follow. The others wait for the next sync, until Gerfaut asks that server for all of them again:
>
> * **After a limit on the number of addresses:** Gerfaut asks again a day later, or an hour later when the server took none.
> * **After the server refuses one address:** A server can turn down a single address, such as one with a history too long for it. Unlike a limit on the number of addresses, this refusal still holds a day later. Gerfaut asks for that address again once Live starts over.
> * **After ElectrumX cuts Live off:** ElectrumX does so when the list costs it too much. Gerfaut then asks it for fewer addresses until Live starts over.
>
> Live starts over when you change the backend, the network or the Tor settings, or when Gerfaut or Live restarts. Turning Live off and on again does the same, with the `New transactions` switch on desktop.
>
> On your own node, after a limit on the number of addresses or a cut from ElectrumX, [raise the subscription limit](/docs/settings/backends-and-your-own-node#raise-the-subscription-limit-of-your-electrum-server) to follow every address.

## See which wallets wait for the next sync

When Live cannot follow every address, a note under the Live status in **Settings** > **Notifications** says how many addresses of how many wallets wait for the next sync. Off your own node, the note points to `This is my node` in **Settings** > **Network**. On your own node, it names the server setting to raise after a limit on the number of addresses or a cut from ElectrumX, not for one refused address.

Each wallet then carries a badge:

* **`Live`:** Live follows every address of the wallet.
* **`Partly live`:** Live follows the addresses that come first in [its order](#make-live-follow-every-address). The others wait for the next sync.
* **`At next sync`:** Live follows none of the addresses of the wallet. A payment to it shows at the next sync.

**Android**

The badge shows on the wallet's card on the home screen and on its row in **Settings** > **Wallets**. On the wallet page, it sits under the sync line, next to a count such as `40 addresses wait for the next sync.` The permanent notification reads `Connected to your server · some addresses wait for syncs`.

**Desktop**

The badge shows on the `Live watch` row of the `Watch status` card, on the wallet's Overview, with a count under it such as `40 addresses wait for the next sync.` It also shows on the wallet's row in **Settings** > **Wallets**.

## Pin the wallets Live follows first

When Live cannot follow every address, it follows the wallets you pin before the others.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Pinned wallets go before every other wallet. Pinning several large wallets can leave the others to the syncs.

**1. Open Settings > Wallets**

Select **Advanced** under the wallet list.

**2. Select the switch of each wallet to pin**

The switches sit under `Always watch live first`. Live picks its addresses again at once. Folded, the button reads `Advanced · 1 wallet watched live first`.

**Android**

## Keep Live running on Android

Live keeps running when you leave Gerfaut, swipe it away from the recent apps or restart the phone. A check every 15 minutes stays scheduled under it, for whenever Live stops.

* **Stop:** Select **Stop** on the permanent notification to turn Live off. `Check for transactions` goes back to `Every 15 min`.
* **Force stop:** Force-stopping Gerfaut in the Android settings ends Live until you open Gerfaut again.
* **No wallet:** When you remove the last wallet of the selected network, Live stops with its permanent notification. Live starts again when you add a wallet.
* **Tor:** With a `.onion` backend and the built-in Tor, the Tor client stays active for as long as Live runs, which costs battery.
* **Disguise:** Turning on the [calculator disguise](/docs/settings/app-lock#disguise-the-app-as-a-calculator-on-android) stops Live. Select `Live` again once you [turn the disguise off](/docs/settings/app-lock#turn-off-the-disguise).
* **`Stopped by Android. Tap to restart.`:** Select the line to start Live again.
* **`Battery: restricted`:** Select **Fix** to ask Android for the battery exemption again.

## Read a notification

A notification reads the same on Android and desktop. It names the wallet and says what happened, such as `Received 0.01000000 BTC · pending`, then `Received 0.01000000 BTC · confirmed`.

* **Long wallet name:** A name longer than 64 characters is cut short and ends in `…`.
* **Several transactions:** Gerfaut sends at most three notifications per wallet at once, then one that counts the rest, such as `2 more transactions`. A payment no longer coming always gets its own.
* **A burst of notifications:** Gerfaut posts at most 20 notifications a minute. The last one reads `More transactions are coming in. Open Gerfaut to see them.` Payments no longer coming count apart, so a burst of transactions never silences one.
* **Hidden amounts:** While [amounts are hidden](/docs/everyday-use/balances-and-history#hide-every-amount), a notification reads like `New transaction · pending`, with no amount.
* **App lock:** On Android, the [`Show wallet and amount`](#hide-the-wallet-and-amount-on-android) switch decides whether a notification names the wallet and the amount, locked or not. On desktop, a notification names no wallet and no amount while Gerfaut is locked.
* **Payment no longer coming:** When an incoming payment leaves the mempool before it confirms, and nothing pays the wallet as much in its place, a notification says so, such as `A pending payment of 0.00150000 BTC is no longer coming`. For a payment that simply left the mempool, Gerfaut waits until two syncs, at least ten minutes apart, have both missed it.
* **Fee bump:** A payment Gerfaut already announced brings no new notification when its sender bumps the fee.
* **Fallback on Android:** When Gerfaut cannot write a notification, it still posts one with no wallet and no amount, such as `More transactions are coming in. Open Gerfaut to see them.`

## Hide the wallet and amount on Android

> [!WARNING]
>
> With `Show wallet and amount` on, anyone who sees your phone's lock screen can read which wallet moved and by how much, even while Gerfaut is locked. Android hides that text only if your lock screen settings hide notification content.

**1. Open Settings > Notifications**

`Show wallet and amount` sits under `New transactions`. It is on by default. Gerfaut greys it out while `New transactions` is off.

**2. Select the Show wallet and amount switch**

Each notification then carries the title `Gerfaut` and a line such as `New transaction · pending`, with no wallet name and no amount.

## Put a widget on your Android home screen

**1. Hold an empty spot on your home screen**

Select **Widgets** and find Gerfaut.

**2. Drag one of the three widgets**

* **Bitcoin price:** The price in your currency, from your [price source](/docs/settings/units-and-fiat#show-the-fiat-value).
* **Balance:** The total of your wallets and up to four of them by name.
* **Network:** The block height of the last sync.

![An Android launcher with the three Gerfaut widgets: Bitcoin price, Balance with masked amounts per wallet, and Network with the block height.](https://mintcdn.com/gerfaut/lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA/images/android/widget.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=lxGkHstk_-7EsZEA\&q=85\&s=b2ec1dd1fff810ab5f77f7e61ed84d28)

The `Bitcoin price` widget says when Gerfaut fetched the price, such as `as of 09:41`. A price from an earlier day shows its date too, such as `as of Oct 03, 09:41`, or `as of Oct 03` when the widget is too narrow for the time.

With CoinGecko as the price source, the widget also reads `Powered by CoinGecko`. With a `.onion` backend, it [never starts Tor](/docs/settings/tor#route-other-requests-through-tor) for the price alone.

The `Balance` widget shows `•••••` until you select the `Show balances on widgets` switch in the `Widgets` card of **Settings** > **Notifications**, and while you [hide amounts](/docs/everyday-use/balances-and-history#hide-every-amount) in Gerfaut. While an [app lock](/docs/settings/app-lock) is set, it shows no wallet name and no amount. Gerfaut greys out the switch until you remove the lock.

A widget refreshes while Gerfaut is open, and about every 15 minutes in the background while it sits on your home screen. That background refresh fetches the price only, so balances and block height are those of the last sync. A widget never shows an address or a transaction id.

Turning on the [calculator disguise](/docs/settings/app-lock#disguise-the-app-as-a-calculator-on-android) removes the widgets from your home screen. Add them again once you [turn the disguise off](/docs/settings/app-lock#turn-off-the-disguise).
